Arigna Fuels - Frequently Asked Questions

Arigna Fuels Frequently Asked Questions

Is Harvest Flame coal?

No, Harvest Flame is not coal. It is a biomass fuel made from agricultural residues.

What is Harvest Flame made from?

Harvest Flame is made from biochar, which we create from olive stones.

What is biochar?

Biochar is a type of charcoal produced by heating organic materials (such as olive stone) in a low-oxygen environment, a process called pyrolysis. This results in a carbon-rich material that has many uses, including improving soil health, enhancing water retention, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and in our case, to make Harvest Flame for domestic heating.

Why do you use olive stones to make Harvest Flame?

While we would prefer to use a raw material that is indigenous to Ireland, there is currently nothing available in the quantities we require. Biochar can be made from many agricultural residues, and we have tested over 200 in our laboratory. We landed on olive stone as it is a dense product that can bind together easily and has a high heat output for the end user. Also, no trees are felled to produce Harvest Flame, making it sustainable and renewable. The olives we use are a by-product of olive oil production and would otherwise be left to rot, emitting toxins. Additionally, the ships used to bring olive stones into Ireland have a lower carbon footprint than trucks used for domestic deliveries.

Can the ashes of Harvest Flame be used as a fertilizer?

Yes, because Harvest Flame is a natural product, the ashes can be used as a fertilizer in gardens—provided no other items have been burned in your Harvest Flame fire. You can never use ashes from coal fires in this way. For more information on using Harvest Flame ashes in your garden, please visit this page XXX.

Are Harvest Flame bags recyclable?

Yes, Harvest Flame bags are recyclable but require the inside to be completely clean, just like your milk carton.

Where can I buy Harvest Flame?

We have stockists nationwide. Check out our handy Stockist Map. If you want to order a 10kg sample bag to try, you can order it online from us here.

What makes Harvest Flame better than burning wood?

Harvest Flame does not require any trees to be felled to produce. The olive stones we use come from the fruit on olive trees, which regrow every year. Because of the way Harvest Flame is produced, it has a higher heat output than wood and burns more slowly.

How should I store my Harvest Flame to keep it dry and efficient?

Harvest Flame should not be stored out in the rain and should always be covered and kept dry. This is because it is a biomass product and excessive water exposure could cause it to disintegrate.

Can I order Cosyglo or Ecobrite on your website?

No, we only sell our biomass products by the pallet online, as well as our 10kg sample bags which are sent through An Post. Cosyglo and Ecobrite can be purchased through one of our many stockists nationwide. Find your nearest stockist using our Stockist Map.

Is burning Harvest Flame better than burning traditional smokeless coal?

For every tonne of Harvest Flame that is burned instead of coal, 1.5 tonnes of CO2 is offset.
