Harvest Flame Ash as a Fertiliser

Using Harvest Flame Ash as a Garden Fertiliser

Harvest Flame is made from biochar, which we create using olive stones. The ash from Arigna Fuels’ Harvest Flame can be beneficial in the garden, but it must be used correctly to avoid harming plants.

Please note: Harvest Flame is NOT coal. You can never use ashes from coal fires in this way. They should not be spread on the garden.

The Benefits of Harvest Flame Ash

Nutrient Boost

  • Harvest Flame ash contains potassium (potash) and phosphorus, essential for plant flowering and fruiting.
  • It provides calcium, aiding root development and plant health.
  • It also contains small amounts of magnesium and phosphorus to support plant growth.

Soil pH Adjustment

  • Due to its alkalinity, Harvest Flame ash can help raise soil pH, beneficial for neutralizing acidic soils.
  • It is ideal for crops that prefer alkaline soils, such as brassicas (cabbage, broccoli), lavender, and fruit trees.

Pest Deterrent

  • Sprinkling Harvest Flame ash around plants can help deter slugs and snails, as they dislike crawling over it.
  • It works best when dry, so reapply after rain.

Compost Enhancer

  • Harvest Flame ash can be added to compost to neutralise acidity and improve decomposition.
  • Only use in moderation—too much can reduce microbial activity.

Here’s how Harvest Flame ash can be used effectively

Application Guideliines

  1. Soil Testing: Before applying Harvest Flame ash, test your soil’s pH. Most vegetables thrive in soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. If your soil is below this range, Harvest Flame ash can help raise the pH.
  2. Quantity: Apply Harvest Flame ash at a rate of 50-70 grams per square meter. It’s best to do this on a still day in winter and wear gloves to protect your hands. Application can also occur in autumn or early spring before planting to allow soil integration.
  3. Application Method: Evenly sprinkle the Harvest Flame ash over the soil surface and incorporate it into the soil by raking or forking.
  4. Composting: Harvest Flame ash can be added to compost heaps to neutralise acidity, creating a more balanced environment for decomposition.

    Precautions

    1. Avoid Over-application: Excessive use can lead to overly alkaline soil, potentially harming plants. Regular soil pH testing is advisable.
    2. Selective Use: Refrain from using Harvest Flame ash around acid-loving plants such as blueberries, rhododendrons, and azaleas, as it can raise soil pH unfavourably for these species. Please check your plants preferred soil pH before application.
    3. Source of Ash: Only use ash from Harvest Flame fires that have not been burned with anything else.

Please note: Harvest Flame ash should not be used in your garden if you have burned anything else besides Harvest Flame in your fire.
